When your puppy goes home with you, it will already be microchipped. This will allow for a vets office or police station to scan your dog and receive your contact information. While this is amazing, it only works if you have it registered and the information is up to date. Register your microchip here for free, but be sure to also list it with the AKC

These zip up beds are amazing, they are even easy to wash which is incredibly rare! We used an XL for Zara, and the zipper protector once the puppies were using it. I cannot tell you how many dog beds we have gone through that end up thrown out just because they dont hold up in the wash.I was so excited to find this bed, and even happier when our girls loved it! Use the code SUPREME for a special discount!
Think you want to add a Doberman to your family? Read about the breed and make sure it is the right fit for your family first, as they are not for everyone! I love Zara to death but she is VERY hard headed and weighing in at 125# when she doesn’t want to do something - good luck getting her to do it! She is a good mix of energy and calm being half American and half European, but generally Dobermans are working dogs…they need a purpose, a job, and without that they will act out. They may chew your couch, or destroy your wall, just because they’re bored and pent up. Zaras favorite pass time is taking anything and everything she can out the dog door into the backyard and ripping it to shreds
It was always common practice to get your dog spayed or neutered at 6 months old, but more recent research has shown that especially with large breed dogs it is best to wait until they are fully developed - which for our Dobermans is at about 2 years old. This is more critical for a female than a male, as females have been known to develop incontinence issues if spayed too early - but I can also tell you from experience a female dog in heat is not a fun time so please do your research and speak with a vet you trust and make the best decision for you and your family
While it might sound tempting to get two puppies at the same time, it will actually create more harm than good. Sure they will keep each other occupied while you’re away but they will be harder to train, they will bond more to each other than to you, etc.
After many years of working in the rescue world one of the things I learned was the importance of a quality dog food - and the horrible ingredients some of the common names contain! This is what we feed our girls, it is one of the more affordable quality options, we recommend it and it is made here in Wisconsin. If you do not choose this food, please just do not go grain free - it is not good for Dobermans. Purina Pro Plan is another good option if you want a more “retail available” food
I did a lot of research before purchasing Zara, I knew next to nothing about Dobermans honestly, and one of the things I kept coming across was “this dreaded Z Factor”. This is actually an article I found after I purchased Zara, but I love the way that it explains the WZ registration and why it is not a bad thing. I assure you that Zara is healthy, she does not carry the albino mutation.
If you’re like me you grew up in a home that your pets only saw the vet if they REALLY had to, and we always had a large amount of animals...from dogs to chinchillas to ducks to even a raccoon once and literally everything in between. Well my parents dogs always lived many years - well into their teens. And yet when I got my first dog of my own, and I took her to the vet regularly and followed their full shot schedule - she passed away at the young age of 7 from kidney failure. I blame all the shots and chemicals we pump them full of now - and I decided after that and my friends dog getting cancer young that I was only going to do the rabies vaccine once the initial puppy shots were complete
